Circling Round Featured Artist: Brea Frey

Brea Frey has been selected as a featured artist in the Miami University Art Museum 2020 Student Response Exhibition! Frey is a senior communication design major with a printmaking minor. She is from Lima, OH and she feels so fortunate to have found her home at Miami in the Communication Design program.

Her featured artwork, Cyclical Growth, is inspired by a conversation during a very spiritually strong season in her life, in which she was told “This is great, but it won’t last. Life is like a roller coaster of spiritual highs and lows”. Frey states “The problem with this metaphor is that a roller coaster’s first hill is always the biggest. I can’t imagine that I summit at my first high and then come crashing down quickly with only small glimpses of growth for the rest of the ride.”

Frey is a Letterpress printer, and she creates artwork using a 1300 pound machine made in 1913. Her dream job is to print alongside others and teach people about Letterpress printing.

This year’s SRE topic was Circling ‘Round, where students thought about what a circle meant to them and how they might interpret it in art. Nearly 100 submissions were received. 34 works by 58 students were chosen to be featured in the spring 2020 exhibition. As a juried exhibition, all works were selected through a formal process by a committee.

The exhibition will open Tuesday, January 28 and will remain through alumni weekend, closing on June 13. Voting will be open until Apr. 11, 2020. There will be an artist celebration and award ceremony held on April 14, 2020 at 6 PM where three works will be awarded prizes totaling over $800. The awards are sponsored by the Art Museum Membership Association.
