Saumyabrata Roy has been selected as a featured artist in the Miami University Art Museum 2020 Student Response Exhibition! Roy is an architecture graduate student at Miami. He is from Dhaka, Bangladesh and is a part of the Bangladesh Students Association organization at Miami. He chose to attend Miami University for graduate school because, “when searching for a school to conduct my graduate studies that share a similar attitude towards design and pedagogical methodologies which aligns with my empathetic preference towards architecture, I found Miami University’s The Department of Architecture + Interior Design to be the perfect fit,” said Roy. “Being a university faculty member myself, I know the motto of student-directed independent research and transformative design at its core. The school’s attitude towards competitive, collaborative and interdisciplinary experiences with numerous opportunities for domestic and international off-campus study will ensure my growth as a student of architecture through a multidisciplinary learning approach,” he added.
Roy’s featured artwork, titled Taming the Dragon, was inspired by, “life and the adventure that is associated with it,” said Roy. Besides being an architect and an artist, he is also a musician, photographer and aquarist. He has a big dream career goal of being one of the notable architects of the 21st century.
This year’s SRE topic was Circling ‘Round, where students thought about what a circle meant to them and how they might interpret it in art. Nearly 100 submissions were received. 32 works by 58 students were chosen to be featured in the Spring 2020 exhibition. As a juried exhibition, all works were selected through a formal process by a committee.
The exhibition will open Tuesday, January 28 and will remain through alumni weekend, closing on June 13. Voting will be open until April 11, 2020. There will be an artist celebration and award ceremony held on April 14, 2020, from 6 to 8 PM where three works will be awarded prizes totaling over $800. The awards are sponsored by the Art Museum Membership Association.
