Our fifth Student Response Exhibition, Outside the Box, is open, and you can come check out the unique creations of 34 students (and vote for your favorite)!
This is our next post in a series featuring the student artists who have created one or more pieces displayed in Outside the Box.
Meet our featured artist, Hannah Ayers!
Hannah is a Graduate Student focusing on Painting, from Cassopolis, MI!
She came to Miami because it was the most affordable option for grad. school. She enjoys reading novels and poetry, hiking, running, and road-tripping with friends. Her favorite genre of art is provisionalist paintings, and her dream job is to be an Art Professor.
The Student Response Exhibition asked students to think beyond physical limits with the concept of a box. For Hannah’s piece, titled The Weight of Living II, she states,
“As an artist I am interested in the way we collect and discard memories. We attempt to preserve memory but through recollection and layers of time they become altered. This work is inspired by butterfly boxes- the juxtaposition of delicate beauty with cruelty and examination. I am fascinated with the exactitude with which something so free can be treated as a specimen. This work also relates to the qualities of Tibetan prayer flags; they become more tattered over time, and as they do they intend to release compassion to the air. This work is about fragility and my personal experiences as a woman. I am hoping to offer a fresh perspective on the ways we attempt to contain voices when they are at their most vulnerable. These objects challenge preconceived ideas of strength to evoke empathy in the viewer through the power of sensitivity.”
Come see the exhibition and vote for your top three favorites! Voting will continue until April 6 and the exhibition celebration and awards ceremony will be held on April 9, from 7-9 p.m.
