Outside the Box Featured Artist: Rachael Maupin

By Olivia Semsel, Arts Management Intern

Our fifth Student Response Exhibition, Outside the Box, is open, and you can come check out the unique creations of 34 students (and vote for your favorite)!

This is our next post in a series featuring the student artists who have created one or more pieces displayed in Outside the Box.

Meet our featured artist, Rachael Maupin!

Rachael is a Senior Art Major, with a Fashion Design minor, from Cincinnati, OH!

She came to Miami for the amazing studio accommodations. At Miami, Rachael is a part of the metals program. She enjoys crocheting, sewing, and making jewelry, and her favorite genre of art is wearable art. Her dream job is to have her own business!

The Student Response Exhibition asked students to think beyond physical limits with the concept of a box. For Rachael’s sculpture, titled Global Preservation, she states,

“Honeybees are responsible for 1/3 of the world’s crops. Without them it is speculated that we would have less than 10 years to live. Here, I have taken honeycomb outside of a beebox and sculpted it around what we recognize as a globe. This sculpture touches base with ideas of global warming with the wax melting over the surface, and with dead bees and flower petals suggestive of ideas of pollution. For thousands of years, honeybee by-products, such as wax and honey have been used in various forms for preservation. This artwork pushes the thought that we must save the bees in order to preserve ourselves and the planet. This piece challenges the viewer to think outside of their own box of existence and think about some of the long term effects of neglecting our planet.”

Come see the exhibition and vote for your top three favorites! Voting will continue until April 6 and the exhibition celebration and awards ceremony will be held on April 9, from 7-9 p.m.
