Outside the Box Featured Artist: Austin Cathey

By Olivia Semsel, Arts Management Intern

Our fifth Student Response Exhibition, Outside the Box, is open, and you can come check out the unique creations of 34 students (and vote for your favorite)!

This is our next post in a series featuring the student artists who have created one or more pieces displayed in Outside the Box.

Meet our featured artist, Austin Cathey!

Austin is a MFA Studio Art Graduate Student, from Canton, NC!

He came to Miami because of the great MFA program. He likes to create art, read, listen to music, watch movies, and play Skyrim. His favorite genres of art is the landscape painting movement known as the Hudson River School. His dream job is to work as a Character Designer for Square Enix.

The Student Response Exhibition asked students to think beyond physical limits with the concept of a box. For Austin’s sculpture, titled Among the Fragmented, he states,

“This work explores ideas of fragmentation and uncertainty within the context of a contemporary world where firm footing is fleeting at best. The drawing gently shifts away from the stable ideas of traditional drawings as it breaks into the space of the viewers. The drawings are made by liquefied inkwash or paint that is allowed to evaporate. The artist then responds to the drawings by cutting into the natural reticulations that occur, combining chance, accident, intention, and intuition in order to bring the forms to life. By creating the contours with irreversible certainty, the works seek to derive order and acceptance from the chaos and confusion we face every day.”

Come see the exhibition and vote for your top three favorites! Voting will continue until April 6 and the exhibition celebration and awards ceremony will be held on April 9, from 7-9 p.m.
