Contact Sheets

Photo of Contact Sheets.

After taking photographs, Schapiro would develop the roll of film, split the negatives and print them as contact sheets. This would allow him to view each image and select his favorites for printing. This practice is commonplace with film photographers, as it allows them to see their images in one place without enlarging and developing each photograph individually. Like many photographers who regularly used contact sheets as a photo production tool, Schapiro often annotated his contact sheets, marking in colorful grease pencil which photos he liked best and the ratio in which he wanted them developed.
