He provided invaluable assistance to the lab by counting zooplankton samples, adding to a zooplankton database that spans 30 years. She worked closely with PhD student Rachel Pilla to develop models to estimate periods of ice cover. PLEON, or the Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network, focuses on water quality education. Alessia\u00a0designed PLEON&#8217;s logo and web site. Since parasites have shown a sensitivity to UV, Matt set out to explore the UV sensitivity of other aquatic parasites including <em>Pastueria<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Saprolegnia<\/em>. He and his PhD mentor, were awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/miamioh.edu\/research\/student-research\/project-funding\/duos\/index.html\">DUOS\u00a0<\/a>to conduct this study.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"85\" data-permalink=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/people\/undergraduates\/kateh_hughes-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/KateH_Hughes-1.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"120,130\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"KateH_Hughes\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/KateH_Hughes-1.jpg\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-85\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/KateH_Hughes-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"150\" \/><strong>Kate Hackett<\/strong>, a Hughes Intern,\u00a0studied how optical properties of water from different sources changed over time.\u00a0\u00a0Kate says &#8220;my experience was one of the highlights of my undergraduate career. Through her 4-year tenure in the lab, she worked with multiple organsisms and labs. Claire explains that &#8220;the USS program is a great opportunity for students to work closely with graduate students and faculty and to experiment with techniques. My USS project gave me the opportunity to expand my research and investigate new projects and venues of study, motivated me to learn about a new subject, and above all allowed me to develop my capabilities as a researcher and collaborator.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"83\" data-permalink=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/people\/undergraduates\/cody_glacier_c6\/\" data-orig-file=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/Cody_Glacier_C6.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"117,103\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"Cody_Glacier_C6\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/Cody_Glacier_C6.jpg\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-83\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/Cody_Glacier_C6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"117\" \/>Cody Green<\/strong> earned a USS award for summer 2009. Cody&#8217;s research focused on reconstructing historic DOC patterns in Emerald Lake using sediment cores. He coupled patterns from the field with analyses using advanced instrumentation in the lab to contribute to a broader research question- how do changes in climate affect the diatom and zooplankton communities of alpine lakes?<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"87\" data-permalink=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/people\/undergraduates\/sam_kersey_sm\/\" data-orig-file=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/Sam_Kersey_sm.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"117,127\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"Sam_Kersey_sm\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/Sam_Kersey_sm.jpg\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-87\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/global-change-limnology-lab\/files\/2018\/12\/Sam_Kersey_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"117\" height=\"127\" \/>Sam Lee<\/strong> received a USS award for summer 2008. According to Sam, &#8220;the USS program allowed me to participate in something I would never have otherwise had the opportunity to experience. I had the opportunity to work in the best &#8220;office&#8221; I could imagine as part of a priceless, hands-on learning experience of every aspect of the research process.
