RNA interference

Systemic RNAi refers to the spread of gene-silencing effects from cell to cell throughout the entire organism.  This process is initiated when dsRNA is administered to the organism and taken up by the cells.  Upon entry into the cell, dsRNA processing, and the targeting and degradation of complementary mRNA occur.  This technique allows us to create a loss-of-function phenotype at the desired stage of development by simply injecting the cricket with double-stranded RNA.
